In 2019 I was at Dragon Burn (China Regional Burning Man) and I stumbled into a BDSM tent where I saw people getting tied up. The intricate rope designs pressed into the flesh of the models was artistic, passionate and sexy. I returned to the tent days later where I was introduced to a man they called the Shibari master who agreed to introduce me to the art.
A crowd gathered as he began to tie me and I immediately noticed my connection to the present moment as the ropes connected me to my physical reality. My pulse quickened and I was nervous until I realized I had the power and had made the decision to put my trust into the skills of the master and he had accepted my trust and that at any moment should I feel uncomfortable I could have him untie me. I stopped fighting and relaxed into the ropes and the grip of the ropes began to feel like a safe embrace.
When I returned to Shanghai I met @huawho_ who would become my Shibari teacher. She taught me that Shibari is a language. You need to pay attention to the breath, the movement, the words, and the moans of someone you are tying and communicate similarly when being tied. I am still quite new to the entire practice and am looking forward to seeing growth in the ways that it becomes more a part of my life.
